The backstory

The Blue Bank, the Community Center in Þingeyri, is a non-profit organization founded in June 2017 by three parties; Vestinvest, Ísafjörður and Simbahöllin. The Blue Bank was created in response to cuts to services in the village and to promote job creation.

Alongside services to local residents, the Blue Bank is an international platform for entrepreneurship and innovation, where the Blue Bank, for example, hosts the annual Startup Westfjords and offers various events and workplaces that support domestic and foreign entrepreneurs. The Blue Bank has already become a model for the same kind of services in smaller communities in Iceland and abroad.

The year 2022 was the fifth full year of operation of the Blue bank. The beginning of the year was unlike any other due to the pandemic, which was still affecting social gatherings and travel

At the Blue bank, the co-working space and other rental spaces were used for more longer stays, but the number of users had decreased during the pandemic. However, the number of guests and tenants increased as the year progressed.

In 2021, there were changes in the Blue Bank's operations due to Covid restrictions. Fewer people took advantage of the co-working space and meeting facilities, and fewer events could be held. However, a number of things were offered, both over the internet and in person between restrictions.
